Environmental sciences are a distinct academic discipline that has assumed an ever-increasing role to comprehend the effect of human activities into the natural world, particularly on individual species, ecosystems, and human health. Environmental sciences is nourished and tightly linked to other disciplines, like biology, chemistry, physics, statistics and economy, to facilitate a holistic approach for the interpretation of the human dimension upon nature. To this core of knowledge, environmental scientists add a system’s approach to examine issues and provide solutions, within an ecologically connected network of anthropogenic and natural factors.
Master and Doctoral Degrees
Since 2001, the School of Natural Sciences and Technology offers the master in science degree (MES) and the doctor in philosophy degree (Ph.D.) in Environmental Sciences. There are three options for both Master and Ph.D. degrees: Biology, Chemistry, and Management. The load for the master degree is 35 credits, including 6 for the research thesis; for the management option, the 6 thesis credits are divided into 3 internship credits and 3credits for a group work under the supervision of a professor. For the Ph.D. degree; the load is 56 credits, 21 of which are for the dissertation process, which includes grade exam and a research proposal defense.

The School strongly recommends that all prospective applicants contact faculty members regarding potential research interests and possible mentorship as early as possible. The applicant will find this early dialog highly advantageous in both the application process and their subsequent academic progress and development, if admitted to the program.
Environmental Management is the responsible use of natural, economic and human resources in ways that protect and improve the environment. It seeks to protect valued ecological and economic assets, manage local areas in the most appropriate way and enhance the relationship between people and the natural environment. Environmental managers work to establish sustainable socioeconomic development for present and future generations through responsible stewardship of the natural environment and in both the private and public sectors to help establish appropriate public policy, achieve compliance with environmental standards and regulations, and to conduct business in an environmentally responsible manner. Applicable work areas include Natural Resources Conservation and Management; Public Environmental Policy and Regulation; and Industrial Environmental Management (practice, and regulation).
Environmental Biology is an integrated field that explains the diversity of life, biological process and the surrounding environment. It includes various fields such as botany, ecology, microbiology, ecosystem management, social sciences, legislation, ethics, biodiversity and conservation. Students will obtain information on the fundamental process of life, its complex components (individuals, populations, communities and ecosystems) and how climate change, contamination of resources and, and natural and anthropogenic disturbances affect these components. After completion of the degree, students will have a fuller understanding of the surrounding environment, and how to be more respectful, and preserve it for future generations.
Environmental Chemistry is the study of the chemical, physical, and biochemical process that occur in natural places. This discipline involves the analysis of the sources, reactions, transport, effects, and fates of chemical species in the air, soil, and aquatic environments, and also the effect of human activity on these. It is an interdisciplinary science that integrates chemistry, ecology, and physics, to provide insight into environmental problems and to find solutions and alternatives for pollution control. To understand how the contaminated and uncontaminated environment works, it is necessary to determine which chemicals and in what concentrations are they present. A professional environmental chemist is capable of using modern analytical tools and techniques to answer these questions, and to provide solutions to reduce potential pollution at the source.
